Love Wins Discussion – Reflections & Resources

29 Apr

Well we finished our first Love Wins discussion and I think it went very well. I would guess we had about 100 people show so there were plenty of seats available for those who took a chance on getting a seat but did not get advance tickets. Our next event is scheduled for next Thursday and we already have 70+ signed up for that one. Thanks to all who came out. We appreciate your presence, your questions and your kind remarks as we had a chance to meet with many of you one on one. We were especially surprised, and very happy, to see one of our local news stations show up. WZZM-13 was on hand and took some footage and featured it on the 11:00 evening news along with some clips of interviews of Mike Wittmer and Rob Bell. The center of the story was Wittmer’s new book but we were glad to get a mention. The title of the story was “Battle of the Books.” It was a very nice piece. As soon as I see it available online I’ll link you to it. Speaking of links I promised that I would put up the links to the major critics that we mentioned and especially the debate between Adrian Warnock and Rob Bell which was done in the UK. Below are the links.

UPDATE #1: Here’s the WZZM-13 broadcast.

Rob Bell’s debate with Adrian Warnock can be found here. If you click of the “Download the MP3” it will take you right to it.

UPDATE #2: The video of the debate is now available as well. You can find it here.

Scot McKnight’s posts can be found here.

Ben Witherington’s posts can be found here.

Mark Galli’s review is here.

Kevin DeYoung’s review is here. This is a pdf version.

Mike Wittmer’s book is sold in the store. You can order copies from us here.

My review is here.

I had a series of quotations running prior to the beginning of the event. I will make those available on a later post.

If there is anything else you would like for me to post please don’t hesitate to leave a comment. You might want to know where I got some of my quotes or need a reminder of a book I recommended or mentioned. Whatever you need we would love to make the resources available to you.

I want to give my personal thanks to Debbie and the entire Baker staff who worked so hard (most behind the scenes) to make this event an enjoyable and smooth running event. Special thanks to our manager, Sue, who had the foresight to know how important this kind of event would be for our community. I work with a great group of people. You are the finest and I love you all. :)

I was amused by your comment during the Love Wins discussion group on Origen’s taking a certain scripture passage literally and not metaphorically. What is truly ironic is that is ONLY passage that Origen didn’t take metaphorically!
