A Peek at the ESV Bible Translators Debating the Word “Slave”

This is a very interesting clip of the ESV Bible translators as they debate the proper way to translate the original language words that are commonly translated as “slave.” Included in the video are Peter Williams, Gordon Wenham, Jack Collins, Wayne Grudem and Paul House. I also spotted J. I. Packer and Justin Taylor. The committe decides to change the current ESV text which reads “slave” to “bond servant.” The final vote is 9 – 3 in favor of the change.

  1. Gordon Wenham’s sentiments are balanced and accurate. Why allow
political correctness to determine how the text should be translated?
Should we revise other important terms on the basis that some social
    groups may be inflamed?

What ever happened to the days when translators tried to translate
what the text says instead of translating it in a way that is unoffensive?
After all it is God’s word that is being translated, and that makes pleasing
    God the first priority.
