Why Are Fire Engines Red?

D.A. Carson uses the following little ditty to start the chapter on “Logical Fallacies” in his book Exegetical Fallacies.

Why Are Fire Engines Red?

They have four wheels and eight men;

four plus eight is twelve;

twelve inches make a ruler;

a ruler is Queen Elizabeth;

Queen Elizabeth sails the seven seas;

the seven seas have fish;

the fish have fins;

the Finns hate the Russians;

the Russians are red;

fire engines are always rushin’;

so they’re red.

When I hear some of my customers tell me they don’t see the need to study subjects like logic I think of this illustration. I’m not saying if you don’t study logic you’re going to start thinking like this but I’ve seen some stuff that comes pretty close. A little study can prevent a lot of embarrassment.
