This week I’m offering an excellent guide to Old Testament commentaries by Tremper Longman III. I often refer students and pastors to Longman when they are looking for good commentaries on Old Testament books. This is the newest edition (5th edition) which was released this past April. Leave your name in the comments section by NLT Friday, Aug 23rd 6:00 AM EST. I’ll announce the winner that Friday. International entries are welcome.
Just a note on this new edition. I’ve seen negative reviews from Longman in previous editions but his comments on 1 Samuel by F.A. Murphy in the Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible series took me by surprise. He notes “All I can say is that I don’t know what Murphy is talking about, but it’s not the text of 1 Samuel. I can’t recommend this commentary for anyone. No stars.” (55) This does not reflect his view of the series as a whole since he speaks quite highly of the commentary on Deuteronomy by Telford Work. He says there: “I confess that I worry when theologians write a commentary on a biblical book and I am critical of some of the volumes in this series, but Work remains grounded in the text and does not try to avoid difficult exegetical issues. The result is an often-insightful, fresh look at the book.” (42) He gives it four stars.
Old Testament Commentary Survey by Tremper Longman III is from Baker Academic.
