2014 Bible Sale Results by Translation

This past Saturday was our annual 50% off Bible sale. It was incredibly busy as we expected it would be. It was a record breaking year. We sold a total of 308 Bibles. This is 75 more than last year. Here’s the breakdown of what sold by translation.

NIV – 111

ESV – 65

NLT – 36

KJV – 31

NKJV – 13

HCSB – 8

The Message – 8

NKJV – 7

The Passion – 7

Parallel Bibles – 7

NRSV – 4

MEV – 3

1 Year Bibles – 3

CEB – 2

Jewish Study Bible – 2

Amplified – 1

NABRE – 1

Douay-Rheims – 1

A couple of notes. The ESV is back in second place after coming in at third last year behind NLT. Last year it only sold 26 copies (NLT sold 39 last year) so this was quite a come back. As expected, the NIV is head and shoulders above the rest. I was surprised to see The Passion translation place as well as it did since it has not had much publicity. It actually did better than the new MEV which is struggling to get out of the gate. The MEV is still too new to make any judgments about it. Let’s see how it does next year. Perhaps most surprising but not reflected on this list is the number of Spanish Bibles we sold. In years past this section has been virtually ignored but not this year. We sold a total of 22 Spanish Bibles. The prize for most Bibles sold in one transaction is 50 (30 NIV, 10 KJV and 10 ESV). Both The Message and HCSB had minimal increases over last year but are still not very strong on the list. KJV is showing a steady increase selling 8 more than last while the NKJV is declining selling 10 less than last year. Here’s just a few photos from the day. As people browsed the shelves they made their selection and then settled in to compare and make their final decisions. A special thanks to Larry Avery, our HarperCollins sales rep, for joining us. We’re always delighted to have him.

Thank you for sharing the numbers! I quite enjoy these posts on sales updates as little insights into trends overall in the church. It’s also the first post I’ve seen in which there are pictures of the store, which looks AWESOME! I wish I lived close.

Hello Louis, Ditto to J.W.’s comments about the store. Sell any Catholic editions of The Message or Orthodox Study Bible of NKJV? Do you take mail orders during the sale or in-store only? As always, thanks for a great year of posts! Happy Thanksgiving and a blessed Advent.

PS Enjoying my winning copy of ‘Engaging…’ by Levering. Just to work through his sources and index of names is enriching. Thanks again!

      Hi Jon,
I’m glad your enjoying Levering’s book. I liked it as well. I did not sell any of the Bibles you mentioned though I carry both. The sale is for in-store customers only. We have talked about allowing people to call in but the intent is primarily to get people in the door. If we ever change that I’ll be sure to note it on the blog.
